Cental Portugal is a beautiful, diverse region where the countryside varies from the long, sandy beaches of the Silver Coast, to the mountain ranges of the Serra da Estrela, the highest in mainland Portugal. There is an abundance of natural streams of water, pine and chestnut forests and arable land.
The capital is Coimbra, an old university city, steeped in history and full of life. It has many interesting historical buildings as well as roman ruins, riverside bars and restaurants, cobbled streets with little shops, shopping malls, park areas, and the river Mondego running through it.
Our main area is 40 kilometers east of Coimbra and includes the market towns of Arganil and Coja. The Atlantic coast with its long white beaches, is only a 1 hour drive from us, and there is plenty of scope for hiking, horse riding, boating, swimming, and even skiing on the Serra da Estrela mountains.
This is the real Portugal. Mountains, rivers, pine and eucalyptus forests are abundant in this beautiful, unspoilt area, and the scenery is breathtaking. There are many fluvial (or river) beaches for cooling off in fresh water, and most have restaurants and cafes/bars alongside.
This lush, green region is still unspoilt by tourism and crime and offers an insight into the real Portugal where the locals are extremely friendly and helpful. Olive trees and grapevines are predominant, and orange, lemon, kiwi, and other fruit trees grow well in this wonderful climate.
